When Confederate Soldiers saluted General Grant
In the fall of 1863 at Chattanooga, the regular soldiers who were on picket duty, had without permission from their officers declared a informal truce so men from both the Confederate army and Federal army could go to the creek for water without fear from being fired upon by either side . Then something amazing happened, Commanding General Ulysses Grant came down to the picket line , in his memoirs he states ...
“ when I came to the picket guard of our side , I heard the call , turn out the guard for the commanding General. I replied , “never mind the guard “, and they were dismissed and went back to their tents . Just back of these and equally distant from the creek , were the guards of the Confederate pickets . The sentinel called out in like manner ,” Turn out the guard for the commanding General “, and I believe , added “General Grant “. Their line in a moment front faced to the North , facing me , and gave a salute which I returned .”
This is an amazing scene unfolding .... the commanding General of the whole union army in their front and all that one of the rebel soldiers have to do is shoot him and it would all be over , but it was not to be . It was something other , Confederate soldiers had honor and they believed in it and in those days your word was your bond .
